DGIF Elk Restoration Meeting in Missouri

DGIF - Missouri Elk Restoration Area and Facilities Visit – Bureau Terrestrial and Lands and Facilities personnel met with Missouri Department of Conservation staff at the Peck Ranch Conservation Area in southeast Missouri on August 3rd. Staff visited Missouri's elk holding and handling pen and discussed the design and the operation of the facility. MDC shared the design plans as well as recommendations for improvements. These plans and recommendations will be invaluable as DGIF plans construction of a similar facility in Buchanan County. Staff also met with University of Missouri and MDC researchers on August 4th to discuss elk telemetry equipment and cooperative restoration. New technologies were identified that could provide more data, with a potential cost savings of approximately 50%.
