DGIF - Spring Gobbler Harvest - Despite inclement weather early in the season, the spring gobbler harvest through the first two weeks is running 4% ahead of the same period last year. The results are encouraging as inclement weather tends to depress hunter success rates. Hunters may expect good numbers of birds still afield during the balance of the season. With sustained hunter effort and suitable weather, the 2011 season is on course to meet or exceed the 2010 harvest total. Abundant acorn crops last year provided excellent food resources for wild turkey and other wildlife. Birds went into the winter in excellent condition and mild weather conditions enabled birds to maintain good body weights going into the spring season.
